Japanese camera maker Nikon said on Tuesday it would cut 1000 jobs by consolidating four precision-equipment subsidiaries into two and reducing sales and support operations globally.
“Nikon has decided to implement drastic measures for fixed cost reduction in every business step of production, marketing and servicing,” it said in a statement.
The company will slash 800 non-regular jobs, such as contract and part-time jobs, from its domestic manufacturing workforce of 2900 by March 2010, according to Nikon spokesman Katsuhiko Kaneko. It plans to cut another 200 positions from its marketing and servicing staff based in Japan and overseas.
The Tokyo-based company expects to take a charge of more than Y4bn ($42m) for the reorganisation of its units making equipment for semiconductors and liquid-crystal displays, which will be completed by 1 October, the company said in a statement to the Tokyo exchange yesterday.
These restructuring measures are aimed at saving a total of Y8bn ($84.5m) in fixed costs for the year starting April 2011.
On 13 May, Nikon forecast a loss of Y17bn for the year to March 2010, as its precision equipment business has been severely impacted by falling demand for steppers, a device used to make semiconductors.
