Bmibaby, the low-cost airline, has announced 158 jobs would be lost, as part of a restructuring process. The carrier said that 54 pilot and 82 cabin crew positions at Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff airports would go. There will also be 22 management job losses.
Bmi, owned by Lufthansa, added that it has started talks with staff and union representatives and hopes to minimise job losses where possible. Also, as part of its restructuring program, it intends to reduce its fleet size by five aircraft in 2010, from 17 currently.
Crawford Rix, a managing director of Bmibaby said in a statement, “the aviation industry is facing its toughest time ever – it is experiencing record losses and remedial action has to be taken.
Bmibaby is no exception to this. We have to focus our efforts and activities on routes and services that we believe are the best fit for our business,” he added.
Notably, the company plans to expand its East Midlands Airport, which would result in the creation of 10 pilot and 15 cabin crew jobs.
But Brian Boyd, Unite national officer for aviation, said “this announcement casts further doubt over the whole Bmi group, as its new owners, Lufthansa, search for cost savings. Unite members are once again caught at the sharp end of business restructuring. We will (try) to ensure that compulsory redundancy is avoided.”
