Defence giant BAE Systems plans to cut up to 642 jobs over the next two years, due to a downturn in its workload. “We have a responsibility to address a reduction in our forecast workload and manage our cost base to remain competitive and meet our customers’ future requirements,” said Rory Fisher, managing director at BAE, in a press release.
The jobs will go at eight sites across the UK in its Integrated System Technologies Business, which produces surveillance and command systems. This part of the business employs a total of 3700 workers at 11 sites across the UK.
“We will work with our employees and their representatives to explore ways of mitigating these potential job losses and we will ensure employees are fully supported throughout this process,” added Mr Fisher.
BAE Systems has already made a number of job cut announcements this year due to a lack of future contracts.
In September, the company said 1115 jobs would go at its military aircraft unit and, a few months before, it said it would slash 500 jobs in its combat vehicles and weapons unit.
BAE Systems employs a total of 105,000 people worldwide.
