A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a number assigned to an entity or an individual by the Indian income tax department on an application being made to it. Up until 1 April 2010, a non-resident was not required in all cases to register with the income tax authorities and obtain a PAN even in cases where payments to a non-resident were subject to withholding tax in India.
